Here is a bit of history on the origins of Mothers day - A modern version of Mother's Day began in the 1600s in England. Mothering Sunday it was called and was always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Small gifts were given, and a special dessert was also served. In the United States, Mother's Day was first thought of in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe whom you may remember was famous for writing the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Ms. Howe would hold special Mother's Day meetings in Massachusetts every year.The first known observance of Mother's Day was held the 2nd Sunday in May in Michigan in 1877.
